Attorney General Defends Actions Rebukes Republicans For Unprecedented Attacks

Merrick Garland Grilled by GOP Lawmakers Over Trump Search Warrant

Attorney General Defends Actions, Rebukes Republicans for 'Unprecedented Attacks'

Washington, D.C. - Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee today, facing intense scrutiny from lawmakers over his decision to seek a warrant for the FBI to search former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

In his testimony, Garland stated that he personally approved the warrant application after careful consideration of the evidence gathered by the FBI. He defended his actions as necessary to protect national security and uphold the law.

"I determined that it was necessary and appropriate to seek a warrant to search the premises at Mar-a-Lago," Garland said. "This was not a decision that was made lightly or without a thorough review of the facts and the applicable law."

Republican lawmakers grilled Garland on the specifics of the search warrant and the underlying investigation, accusing him of political bias and overreach. Garland rebutted these accusations, stating that the Department of Justice operates independently and is not influenced by partisan politics.

"We do not have a political agenda," Garland said. "We follow the facts and the law, wherever they may lead us."

The hearing comes amidst ongoing investigations into Trump's handling of classified documents and potential obstruction of justice. Garland has appointed a special counsel to lead the investigations, which are ongoing.

The House Judiciary Committee is expected to continue its investigation into the Mar-a-Lago search warrant and the Department of Justice's handling of the Trump investigations.
