Grandpa Accused of Murder After Granddaughter's Fall
Court revives lawsuit against Royal Caribbean
Grandfather faces charges in granddaughter's death
A federal appeals court on Tuesday, July 11, revived a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The lawsuit alleges the cruise line was negligent in the death of an 18-month-old girl who fell from a Royal Caribbean ship's window in 2019.
The girl, Chloe Wiegand, died after falling from the 11th floor of the Freedom of the Seas Cruise ship. Her grandfather, Salvatore Anello, was holding her at the time. Anello has been charged with negligent homicide in Chloe's death.
The lawsuit, filed by Chloe's parents, alleges that Royal Caribbean was negligent in failing to install safety measures that could have prevented Chloe's fall. The lawsuit also alleges that the cruise line failed to warn passengers about the dangers of open windows on the ship.
Royal Caribbean has denied any wrongdoing. The cruise line has said that the windows on the Freedom of the Seas meet all safety regulations. The cruise line has also said that it provides warnings to passengers about the dangers of open windows.
The case is now scheduled to go to trial in 2024.
